About the museum
The Museu da Memória Rural opened in 2013 and is run by Carrazeda de Ansiães Municipal Council. It defines itself as a museum of territorial identity, with a rural and participatory museology project that works together with the local community.
The headquarters, in Vilarinho da Castanheira, uses digital resources to present the intangible heritage and historical memory of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes regions: an interactive timeline, multi-touch tables, screens and an interactive wall, with photographs and video on traditional crafts, wool and its manufacture, viticulture and cereal growing. There is also an interactive table designed for children and a small auditorium with about 50 seats.
The museum is multi-site: besides the headquarters, it includes the Telheira de Luzelos, the Núcleo Lagar de Azeite (olive press unit), the Núcleo Moinho de Vento (windmill unit), the Núcleo Moinhos de Rodízio (rodízio mill unit) and the Núcleo do Ferreiro e do Ferrador (blacksmith and farrier unit), spread across the municipality. It also runs collection and outreach projects, such as the multimedia database Memórias no Território and the journal Revista Memória Rural.
