About the museum

The Museu Dr.ª Berta Cabral was founded in 1957 by Raúl de Sá Correia, former secretary of the Câmara Municipal de Vila Flor and director of the museum until his death in 1993. It is on the Largo Dr. Alexandre de Matos, near the Igreja Matriz.

The building, dating from the 12th–13th centuries, is the former Solar dos Aguilares, the first lords of Vila Flor, and it also served as the town hall. The royal arms and the fleur-de-lis, the town's emblem, can be seen on the main façade, and the arms of the Aguilares, with two eagles, on the west façade. The municipal butcher's shop, the tax office, the National Guard post and the municipal library were also housed here.

The museum holds some 3,000 pieces, the great majority donated by sons and friends of the town and originating from the municipality. The collections include painting, archaeology, ethnography, African crafts, sacred art, numismatics and medals. According to a Lusa report, the municipality recognises the need for renovation works on the building, for which no funding has been secured.
