About the museum
The Museo Diocesano de Zamora opened in July 2012 in the Romanesque church of Santo Tomé, one of the oldest churches in the city. The Diocese of Zamora conceived it as a space to explain the basic content of the Catholic faith through permanent and temporary exhibitions of Christian art.
The permanent collection brings together 134 pieces of sculpture, painting, goldsmith work, metalwork, furniture and stone objects. They range from the 1st to the 19th century and cover Hispano-Roman, Visigothic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and colonial art. The sculptors represented include Gil de Ronza, Gregorio Fernández, Pedro de Mena, Sebastián Ducete, Juan de Montejo and the Zamora-born Ramón Álvarez; the painters include Diego de Quirós, Alonso del Arco and Diego Díez Ferreras; and the silversmiths include Antonio de Burgos, Andrés Gil and Manuel Flores.
The building itself is part of the route: it preserves two capitals from the early 12th century depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi.
