About the museum
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso (MACNA) opened in July 2016 in Chaves, in a building designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The core of the collection consists of fifteen works by the painter Nadir Afonso, donated to the Município de Chaves in 1982 and kept for many years in the Museu da Região Flaviense.
In the 21st century the Município de Chaves entered into two agreements to create the museum and strengthen its collection: the first in 2002 with the artist, and the second in 2015 with the Fundação Nadir Afonso. The collection also includes works by other artists, such as Ema Berta, João Machado, João Cutileiro, Carlos Barreira, Carlos Pinheiro, Cristina Valadas, João Ribeiro and Peter Rosman.
The permanent exhibition, entitled “Nadir Afonso – Entre o Local e o Global” (Nadir Afonso – Between the Local and the Global), presents the artist's work. The museum also has an auditorium, a library, a shop and a bar, and it hosts temporary exhibitions and sociocultural activities.
