About the museum
The Museo Galego do Entroido, known as MUGAE, opened in 2015 in Xinzo de Limia, a town well known in Galicia for the uniqueness of its Entroido, which has been declared of national tourist interest. The museum occupies a refurbished building that was formerly the market hall (plaza de abastos).
The main exhibition occupies the whole of the first floor. It begins by explaining what the Entroido is and what it means for the Galician people, and goes through the customs and calendar of the festival along the “corredor do ciclo do Entroido” (corridor of the Entroido cycle). Further on there are rooms dedicated to the sounds of carnival, with comparsas (parade groups), charangas (brass bands) and typical instruments, and to the food of these days: filloas (pancakes), orejas (fried pastries), cocido or lacón con grelos (pork shoulder with turnip greens).
The most outstanding room is the one devoted to the protagonists, the so-called “raíñas do Entroido” (queens of the Entroido), where costumes and masks of characters are displayed, such as the pantallas of Xinzo, the peliqueiros of Laza, the cigarróns of Verín, the felos of Maceda and the boteiros of Viana do Bolo. Another area explains the peculiar characters of local carnivals. The building also houses the headquarters of the Asociación Pantalla and an exhibition on the writer Carlos Casares.
