About the museum
The Museo dell’Emigrante is housed in several rooms of the former Monastery of Santa Chiara in the historic centre of San Marino and is linked to the Centro Studi Permanente sull’Emigrazione. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries San Marino was a land of mass emigration: thousands of Sammarinese left the Castelli of the Republic to escape poverty and seek their fortune abroad. This diaspora, interrupted only by brief returns, lasted until the mid-20th century and has left more than 13,000 Sammarinese living far from Mount Titano to this day.
The museum aims to preserve the memory of those who lived through this experience and to tell it through images, documents and objects, so that both the descendants of the emigrants and all Sammarinese can learn about this history and recognise themselves in their past.
