About the museum

The Galleria Nazionale is housed in the Logge dei Volontari, a building erected in the late 1930s and renovated to accommodate the museum, in the Giardino dei Liburni in the centre of the City of San Marino. Its origins lie in a long cultural journey that began in 1956 with the “Premio d’arte figurativa del Titano” (Titano Prize for Figurative Art), which marked the revival of artistic debate after the Second World War.

The museum holds the state’s permanent collection, made up of modern and contemporary works acquired from the post-war period to the present. The current display pays tribute to the conference “Arte: Utopia o regressione?” (Art: Utopia or Regression?), held at the Teatro Titano in June 1991 and curated by Lea Vergine, and is divided into four sections: “Considerazioni sul Colore” (Considerations on Colour), “Azioni e Immagini” (Actions and Images), “Icone Postmoderne” (Postmodern Icons) and “Identità Plurali” (Plural Identities).

Artists represented include Emilio Vedova, Achille Perilli, Joseph Beuys, with documentation of the action “Difesa della Natura” (Defence of Nature), Shirin Neshat, Enzo Mari, with his 1986 installation “Dialogo tra Fidia, Galileo, Duchamp, i sette nani e l’Idiota” (Dialogue between Phidias, Galileo, Duchamp, the Seven Dwarfs and the Idiot), Enzo Cucchi, Binta Diaw and Jacopo Rinaldi. The museum is distinguished by the Archivio performativo (Performance Archive), an open space with documents, artists’ portfolios and artists’ books, including 29 volumes made by artists from the small states of Europe.
