About the museum
The Museo di Stato of the Republic of San Marino took shape in the second half of the 19th century and opened to the public in 1899. Its collections have grown over time thanks to numerous donations from all over the world: since 1865, paintings, ceramics and artistic objects have reached the museum as gifts. Since 2001 the restored Palazzo Pergami Belluzzi, in the historic centre of San Marino, has housed the museum.
The museum holds around 5,000 pieces across four levels. On the ground floor, the Archeologia del Territorio section presents finds from the Republic, from the rock sanctuary of Tanaccia on Monte Titano to Villanovan and Roman settlements. The first floor, Arte per la Repubblica, brings together works linked to the history and myth of the state, with paintings by Guercino and his followers, by Cesare and Benedetto Gennari, by Matteo Loves and Elisabetta Sirani.
On the second floor, the Arte di Donazione section offers Limoges enamels, Byzantine icons, paintings from the 16th to the 18th century and a collection of European majolica. The floor beneath houses the Archeologia di Donazione, with Egyptian material (including 23 ampoules of San Mena), Greek, Etruscan and Italic vases and Roman ceramics, and the section on San Marino’s numismatics and medals, with the state’s first issues from 1864 onwards.
