About the museum
The Museo dei Balestrieri is located in the headquarters of the Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, in Contrada Omerelli, in the historic centre of San Marino. It was opened on 13 June 2023 by the Captains Regent and tells, across two floors, the story of a group founded in 1956 to revive an ancient tradition of crossbow shooting competitions, documented since the 14th century.
The rooms display trophies, memorabilia, costumes and musical instruments that document the history of the Federation and its performances at home and abroad, including the first crossbow built on Monte Titano in 1959, as well as postage stamps and ceramics. The Palio delle balestre, which was suspended around 1800, was revived in 1956 at the initiative of Professor Giuseppe Rossi. Today the Federation brings together crossbowmen, flag-wavers, musicians and performers in historical costume.
