About the museum
The Museo di Storia Naturale is part of the Centro Naturalistico Sammarinese, established in 1997 as a cultural hub for natural and environmental sciences. It is housed in the historic centre of Borgo Maggiore, about 150 metres from the cable car station, and can be reached on foot from the centre of San Marino by walking down the Costa dell’Arnella. Since 2012 the centre has been an organisational unit of the Department of Territory and Environment and hosts the Osservatorio della Fauna Selvatica (wildlife observatory).
The visit is divided into six exhibition sections: a high-definition relief model of the entire San Marino territory at a scale of 1:8000, dioramas of the most representative natural habitats, the terracquarium with aquatic and land species such as the crested newt, the ululone and the Apennine frog, the ornithology room with a rich collection of European birds, the zoology section with mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and other invertebrates, particularly local species, and the earth sciences section with mineralogy, geology and palaeontology. Descriptive panels with texts and illustrations complement the labels of the individual specimens.
The museum also offers guided tours of the galleries, guided walks in natural habitats, workshops and educational games, public events and talks, access to the library and support for schools.
