About the museum
The Museo del Francobollo e della Moneta is located in Piazza Garibaldi in the historic centre of San Marino, in the premises of the former philatelic and numismatic office. The exhibition area covers 700 square metres over two floors and brings together thousands of pieces that reconstruct part of the history of the Republic, from the second half of the 19th century to the present, through stamp issues and numismatics.
The philatelic section presents the stamps issued by the Sammarinese Postal Service from 1877 until the Second World War, together with postal agreements with the Kingdom of Italy, first cancellations, postmarks, postboxes, original preparatory designs and printing plates. For the modern era, stamps are displayed with original sketches and paintings by artists such as Corrado Mezzana, Roberto Franzoni, Renato Guttuso, Emilio Greco and Aligi Sassu.
The numismatic section shows the rare first Sammarinese coins of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the state’s commemorative medals, the lire in circulation and for collectors issued from 1972 to 2001, gold scudi, euro coins in circulation and commemorative coins with artistic designs, dies and punches.
