About the museum
The Museo della Tortura is located in Contrada San Francesco in the historic centre of the City of San Marino and is run by the company Museum srl. The exhibition brings together more than a hundred original instruments built to inflict pain and death and offers a visual overview of the history of torture and punishment. Beside each object an explanation describes its use and the circumstances in which it was employed.
The collection includes, among others, the oral pear (pera orale), the saw, the flagellum (flagello), the garrotte, the thumbscrew and the cage, as well as the “collana del fannullone” (collar of the idler), a chain bearing the symbols of faults that was used as an instrument of public humiliation. The museum explicitly refers to human rights: among the quotations offered to visitors is Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
