Limited operations. According to the operator K13, the Lower Gate is closed because of reconstruction works. In September 2026 the city of Košice stated that the museum can still be viewed during the reconstruction of the platform above the entrance. Please check the current status before your visit.

About the museum

The archaeological complex of the Lower Gate was discovered by chance at the end of the 1990s, during the reconstruction of the paving on Hlavná street in Košice. The uncovered parts of the fortifications and the town sewer date from the 13th to the 19th century and are the preserved original entrance to the town. Of the town walls, 26 fragments survive in the centre of the town, and the Lower Gate site is the largest of them; the uncovered section is 65 metres long and, in the area of the barbican, up to 65 metres wide.

The underground museum was opened to the public in 1998. It preserves, for example, the Luxembourg Tower with a stone bridge over the first moat, and the Corvinus stone bridge leading to the barbican. The complex has been renovated, and a new underground exhibition with multimedia presentations and interactive elements has been created.

The exhibition has five thematic sections: the Lower Gate, the fortifications of Košice, water management and the sewer, the history of the town, and the military, with the development of period weapons. Visitors will be interested in the 3D archaeological models of the gate and the whole fortification, and in the audiovisual projections. The exhibition is available in Slovak, Hungarian and English.
