About the museum
Rodošto is the memorial house of Francis II Rákoczi in the grounds of the Katová bašta on Hrnčiarska street in Košice. It is a replica of the exile house in the Turkish town of Rodosto, where the leader of the last Hungarian estates' uprising spent his exile in 1720–1735 and died in 1735. The memorial house has been open to the public since 1991 and is managed by the East Slovak Museum.
The decision to build a replica was taken in 1908, but construction only took place in 1940–1943. Original parts of the interior fittings and the stucco decoration of the former dining room were used during construction. The house stands on the site of older residential rooms and a stable from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The exhibition presents Prince Rákoczi, his life in exile and the solemn funeral in Košice, to where his remains were brought in 1906. The dominant feature is the large dining room, some parts of which Rákoczi himself is said, by tradition, to have made and decorated. The Katová bašta in the same grounds is the largest bastion in Slovakia; its shooting chambers house an exhibition of firearms, and on the upper floor is the Bastion Gallery.
