About the museum
The East Slovak Gallery was established in 1951, two years after the opening of the Slovak National Gallery, as the first regional gallery in Slovakia, in the country's second-largest city. It collects, makes accessible and protects Slovak and foreign fine art, and exhibits it from ancient art to the present day.
Since 1992 the gallery has been housed in the former County House at Hlavná 27, built in 1779 to designs by the Viennese builder J. Langer in the Baroque-Classicist style. In 1888–1889 its front part was remodelled, courtyard wings were added and the rear wing was rebuilt. In the centre of the façade is a sculpted coat of arms of the Abov and Turňa counties from 1558, and on the upper floor there is a representative historical hall with painted coats of arms of the county and its towns.
The second exhibition space is the building at Alžbetina street 22, originally a Baroque building from the early 18th century, which was remodelled in a pseudo-historical style at the end of the 19th century. The gallery is a contributory organisation of the Košice Self-Governing Region. Since 2025 it has had the permanent exhibition Komédia ducha, which interprets the work of Anton Jasusch, a representative of Košice Modernism.
