About the museum
The Vojtech Löffler Museum was established by the Košice – Staré Mesto city district in 1993. It came into being thanks to the decision of the sculptor Vojtech Löffler and his wife Klára to give the city of Košice the artist's work, his house and his art collection. Löffler (1906–1990) was one of the first East Slovak sculptors and had been active on the art scene since the mid-1930s.
The museum protects and exhibits his sculptural work, especially small chamber and figural sculptures in marble, bronze, pewter, ivory and exotic wood. The collection also includes a set of self-portraits by visual artists of the 20th century, among them representatives of the Košice School of Fine Arts, and a collection of folk ceramics and pottery. The permanent exhibition is complemented by the Vojtech Löffler Memorial Room.
Löffler made his gift conditional on creating an exhibition space for contemporary art on the ground floor of the house. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum therefore organises exhibitions of young and contemporary artists, guided tours, workshops for schools and other cultural events.
