About the museum
The memorial exhibition of Sándor Márai in Košice is primarily biographical. Visitors are guided through it by quotations from Márai, which present the writer's biography and work chronologically and thematically. The texts are complemented by photographs, portraits, documents and volumes of books; with the help of technical equipment, visitors can view photographs of Košice of the period and of family members, and listen to sound recordings.
The furniture used to furnish the exhibition is original: thanks to the Jákyová family, the furniture of the Grosschmid family came back to Košice after passing through Miskolc and Budapest. Some objects, for example a sewing machine and a travelling case, relate only indirectly to Márai himself and come from the family of his sister.
The exhibition also presents the writer's wife, Lola, and his brother, the film director Géza Radványi, whose sound recordings tell of Košice, the family home and school, and for whom excerpts from films are also available. The exhibition was opened on the occasion of Hungarian Culture Day and is run by the Slovenské národné múzeum – Múzeum kultúry Maďarov na Slovensku.
