About the museum
The Dubnický kaštieľ (manor house) was built in 1637–1642 by Gašpar Ilešházi, supreme count (hlavný župan) of Trenčín, Liptov and Orava, as the representative seat of the family and the administrative centre of its extensive estates. The early Baroque manor house with late Renaissance elements was built on the site of an older Gothic curia and is among the largest of its kind in Slovakia. Today it is a national cultural monument. After damage by the Kuruc rebels in 1708, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1719–1730, and in 1820 an east wing was added.
The Ilešházi family owned Dubnica until 1835, when Štefan II. Ilešházi sold the estate to the Viennese entrepreneur Baron Juraj Sina. The manor house is accompanied by an extensive park with a stone labyrinth and a grotto with a wooden lookout tower, which is one of only two preserved monuments of this type in Slovakia and the only one that has been reconstructed.
The Dubnické múzeum (Dubnica Museum) was established by the town in 2005 on the initiative of the Historical Society of Ján Baltazár Magin, and in 2010 it moved into the reconstructed part of the manor house. It is a local history institution focused on the history and cultural traditions of Dubnica nad Váhom, on the owners of the manor house and on personalities connected with the town. It also manages the manor house and the grotto, where the town's information centre is also located.
