About the museum
Trenčín Castle guards the trade routes that linked the Mediterranean region with the Baltic. In the period of Great Moravia a stronghold stood here, which was the administrative centre of the surrounding area. The present castle arose in the 11th century as a border fortress guarding the Váh fords and the Carpathian passes, and later it was the seat of a border county, then of a royal county and later a noble county.
The landmark of the castle is Matúš Tower, dating from the end of the 11th century and built in the Romanesque style; around 1270 it was encased in a brick shell and given Gothic features. In the first half of the 16th century, under the Zápolya family, extensive fortifications were built, including a barracks that housed the castle garrison. The castle also has a rotunda with a quatrefoil ground plan, which distinguishes it from all central buildings known so far in Slovakia, and the legend of the Well of Love, with the story of Omar and Fatima.
Today the castle rooms house exhibition spaces and several exhibitions of the Trenčín Museum. Visitors can take the independent Small Circuit or the commented Great Circuit with a guide.

| Good to know | The Small Circuit is without a guide (lower courtyard, barracks, Hladomorňa, Well of Love, Ľudovít Palace, Matúš Tower, chapel and southern fortifications). The Great Circuit is a commented tour with timed tickets (up to 50 people). It lasts about one hour and, in addition to the Small Circuit, includes the rotunda, the lapidarium and Barbara's Palace. It starts at the carriage house by the Zápolya Palace, and visitors should arrive at least 15 minutes early (the walk up to the upper castle takes about 10 to 15 minutes at a slow pace, uphill). Tours in foreign languages and special tours (English, Russian) must be booked at least 5 days in advance. The free mobile app “Multilingual Audio Guide through Trenčín Castle” offers commentary in Slovak, English, Czech and Hungarian. Dogs may enter the exteriors only, on a lead and muzzled. Prams, large bags, food and drink may not be taken into the exhibitions. Children under 12 may enter only accompanied by an adult. |
