About the museum
The Galéria Jána Koniarka was founded in 1976 as the District Gallery in Trnava and in 1978 was named after the sculptor Ján Koniarka. Initially it had no building of its own and exhibited in the premises of the Západoslovenské múzeum (West Slovak Museum) and in other temporary venues. Since 1992 it has been based in the Koppel Villa on Zelený kríček, which was built in 1910–1911 by the Koppel family of entrepreneurs; the building later housed a kindergarten and a workplace of the Ústav národného zdravia (National Health Institute). The first exhibition in the renovated villa opened on 7 May 1992, and in 2002 a modern exhibition wing was added.
The second exhibition space is the former neological synagogue Status quo ante in Halenárska Street, a three-aisled basilica from 1891–1897, designed by the Viennese architect Jakob Gertner. After the Second World War it served as a warehouse. After partial reconstruction, the gallery has used it since 1994 as the Centre of Contemporary Art. Together the two buildings offer up to five exhibition spaces, which can be combined as needed.
The gallery collects, processes and exhibits visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on contemporary art. Its collection has more than 4,800 works and includes sculpture, painting, photography, graphics and other media. Programmatically it focuses on young and mid-career authors, artists connected with Trnava, and themes of social responsibility, feminism and environmentalism. It also organises the Trnava Poster Triennial (Trienále plagátu Trnava) and the Skúter biennial (bienále Skúter). The founding body is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
