About the museum
The manor house in Dolná Krupá was built in 1749–1756 as a single-storey Baroque-Classicist building for Anton I. Brunsvik, to a design by court architect Ján Baptista Martinelli. In 1793–1798 it was extended by Ján Jozef Talherr, and after 1813 Count Jozef Brunsvik had a modern residence created with a large English park, designed by Anton Pius Rigel and the garden architect Christian Heinrich Nebbien. Today it is one of the most typical examples of Classicist country architecture in Slovakia.
Ludwig van Beethoven is linked with the Brunsvik family: around 1799 he taught piano to the young noblewomen Teréza and Jozefína Brunsvik. This is not scientifically proven, but tradition holds that during his visits he lodged in the gardener's cottage, a late Baroque (Rococo) pavilion from the end of the 18th century; since the end of 1992 it has housed the permanent exhibition Pamätník Ludwiga van Beethovena. Later the Chotek family lived in the manor house, especially Mária Henrieta Choteková, the so-called “Rose Countess”, who founded the largest rose garden in Central Europe.
After the Second World War the state confiscated the manor house, and it housed a sanatorium, a political school and a psychiatric hospital. The estate has been managed by the Slovak National Museum since 1978, and since 2003 the whole complex has belonged to the SNM – Hudobné múzeum. In 2021 a comprehensive reconstruction of the interior and exterior began. The park, with rare trees including a giant sequoia, is open to the public free of charge.
