About the museum
The museum is housed in the building of the Franciscan monastery on Františkánske námestie. The monastery was established by Vavrinec Ujlaky, lord of Hlohovec, in 1492 beside the ancient chapel of All Saints. During the Reformation, in 1576, the Franciscans were expelled and the building was burned; it was restored only in 1637, when it received its present square ground plan.
The building served its original purpose until 1950, when the order was abolished. After reconstruction, a local history museum was set up in it in 1959, and after 1990 the Franciscans returned to part of the building.
The permanent exhibitions present archaeological finds from Hlohovec and its surroundings from the Stone Age to the arrival of the Old Hungarians, the vertebrates of the town's surroundings, and historic furniture with portraits and graphic works. The exhibition Františkáni na Slovensku (Franciscans in Slovakia) is temporarily closed. The museum also manages the lookout tower of the Church of St Michael the Archangel, with a collection of historical photographs of the town. The founding body is the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
