About the museum
The municipal (local-history) museum arose on the initiative of the town's residents and members of the civic association Vodný hrad (Water Castle). It was established by the town council on 1 May 2004 and is run by the Dom kultúry v Seredi (Culture House in Sereď). It is housed in the Fándlyho fara, the building of a former Roman Catholic vicarage from 1909, on whose façade there is a memorial plaque to Juraj Fándly, who served as a chaplain in Sereď in 1778–1780.
The museum has five permanent exhibitions. Two are archaeological: História Serede sa začala na Mačianskych vŕškoch (The History of Sereď Began on the Mačiansky Hills) and Vodný hrad Šintava (Šintava Water Castle), which show finds from the Ice Age through to the Slavic period, and medieval finds from the excavation of the courtyard of the Sereď manor house; the exhibits are on loan from the Vlastivedné múzeum v Galante (Local History Museum in Galanta). There is also an exhibition of enlarged postcards, Obrázky odviate časom (Pictures Blown Away by Time), an outdoor exhibition of a vanished Gothic church, and a lapidarium with Baroque statues from the Trinity Column.
The museum also provides an exhibition for visually impaired visitors with a guide line, a 3D model and descriptions in Braille. In the bastion of the Sereď manor house it operates an interactive exhibition on Šintava Castle.
