About the museum
The Okresná galéria v Trenčíne (District Gallery in Trenčín) was established on 15 February 1969 as a cultural and educational institution of the District National Committee. Its initiators included Ladislav Moško, its first director, and several academic painters and sculptors. It was named after the national artist Miloš Alexander Bazovský, who spent the last years of his life in Trenčín, from 1962 to 1968.
From the beginning the gallery focused on Slovak fine art of the 20th century, on the art of the Trenčín region and on the work of Bazovský. It was initially housed in the former Piarist monastery in the historic centre of the town, where new premises were opened to the public in 1979. In 2001, because of restitution, it moved to a building from the end of the 19th century at Palackého 27, which had originally been built by the deputy county official Maršovský.
Today the gallery organises exhibitions, educational programmes and events and runs the Centrum architektúry Trenčín (Centre of Architecture Trenčín). The founder is the Trenčín Self-Governing Region.
