About the museum
Apart from Trenčín Castle, the Karner of St Michael is the only fully preserved Gothic building in the town. It is a two-storey building: in the underground there is an ossuary, and at ground level a chapel. The ossuary was built in the second third of the 15th century to transfer remains from the old graves of the cemetery by the parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary; the chapel was added at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
After the fire of the town in 1528, in which the parish church also burned, the chapel was for many years the only sacred building in the town. In 1560 the ossuary was turned into the town armoury with a metal-casting furnace, where cannonballs were cast and weapons made; later the building also served as a granary and a warehouse.
Since 2007 the object has been managed by the Trenčín Museum. In the basement it is possible to see an archaeologically uncovered furnace and casting pit; on the ground floor is an exhibition of the Gothic art of the Trenčín region. The exhibition is accessible in the season from the beginning of April to the end of October.
