About the museum
The town hall building is one of the most architecturally striking buildings on the Levoča square. The town council decided here on the fate of the town and its surroundings. The building probably arose around the middle of the 15th century and underwent several alterations; it received its present appearance through a reconstruction in 1893–1895.
The exhibition in the town hall is devoted to the history of Levoča, its beginnings, development, period of flourishing and the present. Historical and art-historical objects are complemented by examples of the rich guild production. On the second floor the museum presents artistic collections from the Spiš region, from the Gothic through the Renaissance to the Baroque, for example Mary Magdalene from Danišovce, Gothic sculptures and altars, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and icons.
The town hall also contains an exhibition hall and, since 2000, a small exhibition hall. The building belongs to the Spiš Museum in Levoča, which is part of the Slovak National Museum; the town hall is also used for conferences, concerts and expert lectures.
