About the museum
Since its founding in 1951, the Múzeum Spiša (Spiš Museum) has been housed in the centre of Spišská Nová Ves, in the historic Provinčný dom (Provincial House) on Letná Street, which is a national cultural monument. Since 2002 its founder has been the Košický samosprávny kraj (Košice Self-Governing Region).
The museum is among the most comprehensive regional museums in eastern Slovakia. It collects documents from the whole historical region of Spiš (Spiš region), which extends into the Košice and Prešov regions. It holds roughly 150 thousand collection objects from the fields of history, ethnography, art and music history, technology, numismatics, archaeology, mining, mineralogy, palaeontology, botany and zoology. Its specialisation in the history of the manufacture of keyboard instruments and furniture is notable.
The main building houses the permanent exhibitions História Spiša (History of Spiš) and Príroda Spiša (Nature of Spiš), the second part of which was opened in 2024. The museum also has branch facilities: the Kaštieľ a letohrádok Dardanely (Dardanely Manor House and Pavilion) in Markušovce, the Národopisné múzeum (Ethnographic Museum) and the Rodný dom kpt. Jána Nálepku (Birthplace of Captain Ján Nálepka) in Smižany.
