About the museum

The Galéria umelcov Spiša (Gallery of Spiš Artists) was officially opened on 1 January 1987 and is among the youngest collecting institutions in the region. The basis of its collection consisted of 520 works of art transferred from the Múzeum Spiša in Spišská Nová Ves. Since 2002 it has belonged to the Košice Self-Governing Region, which is its founding body.

The collection now comprises almost 2,500 works of painting, drawing, graphics, illustration, photography, sculpture and intermedia works, with an emphasis on the art of the Spiš region. The first permanent exhibition was Umelci Spiša (Artists of Spiš); in 2012 it was replaced by the exhibition Terra Gothica, with collections on Gothic themes. In 1994 a separate exhibition devoted to the painter Jozef Hanula, who lived and worked in Spišská Nová Ves, was added, and since 2002 a sculpture Garden of Art has been developed.

The gallery offers guided services, educational programmes for all types of schools and for the public, and a virtual tour; since 2015 it has been part of the Google Art project.
