About the museum
The Memorial House of Kálmán Mikszáth stands in the centre of the village of Sklabiná in the Veľký Krtíš district. It is a well-to-do peasant house from the first half of the 19th century, built in 1852. The Hungarian writer Kálmán Mikszáth, one of the most widely read Hungarian authors, spent his childhood and student years in it. He lived in Sklabiná for more than twenty years from 1853, ten of them in this very house.
In the writer's childhood Sklabiná was a bilingual Slovak-Hungarian village. This mixed environment influenced his work, and he remained faithful to his native village until the end of his life. The house is managed by the Slovenské národné múzeum – Múzeum kultúry Maďarov na Slovensku (Slovak National Museum – Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia).
The new exhibition Pod dáždnikom svätého Petra (St Peter's Umbrella) opened on 29 May 2021. Its central theme is love of the native land, and its motifs are inspired by the Palóc people, out of whose world Mikszáth's literary work grew. The exhibition uses artworks from the museum's collections and from other Slovak museums, photographic documents from Hungarian institutions and interactive elements. Apart from the house, the concept includes seven other authentic places in the village that are connected with the plots of Mikszáth's stories in the collection Dobrí Polovci (Good Palóc Folk).
