About the museum

The people of Krupina kept royal privileges and important documents in the town hall and already knew the concept of a museum at the beginning of the 20th century. The idea of establishing a municipal museum arose in 1956; in 1965 the Mestské múzeum v Krupine (Municipal Museum in Krupina) was included in the network of museums in Slovakia, and it was solemnly opened on 29 November 1968 as the Mestské múzeum Andreja Sládkoviča (Andrej Sládkovič Municipal Museum). In 1970 the memorial room of the poet Andrej Sládkovič was reinstalled.

From 1978 to 2010 the museum was part of larger state institutions, first the Zvolen District Museum and later the Forestry and Woodworking Museum in Zvolen. When its closure was threatened, the town took it over: the town council established the Múzeum Andreja Sládkoviča v Krupine on 24 March 2010, and it was solemnly reopened on 17 September 2010.

The permanent exhibition Z histórie Krupiny (From the History of Krupina) on the upper floor covers more than 200 m² and was created in 1994 for the 750th anniversary of the granting of privileges to the free royal town. It has two parts: the history of the town from the oldest settlement to the 20th century, and a literary section on natives of the town, especially Andrej Sládkovič and Elena Maróthy-Šoltésová. The museum also includes the Geschwindova záhrada ruží (Geschwind Rose Garden), cellars known as the krupinské podzemie (Krupina underground), and the digital walk Po stopách Sládkoviča (In the Footsteps of Sládkovič).
