About the museum
The Austrian composer Franz Schubert worked in Želiezovce in 1818 and 1824 as a music teacher in the family of Count Ján Karol Esterházy. During his second stay, in 1824, he lived in the Sovie zámočok beside the town park, a Classicist building that is also called the Sovie zámočok. Until October 2009 the Tekovské múzeum – Levice (Tekov Museum in Levice) had a branch here: the Franz Schubert Memorial Room.
The building was then reconstructed and two new rooms were added. Since 15 May 2010 the Sovie zámočok has housed the Mestské múzeum a pamätná izba Franza Schuberta (Town Museum and Franz Schubert Memorial Room), which is managed by the civic association CASTELLUM ZELIZ. Its collections come also from the holdings of the Slovenské národné múzeum, the Tekovské múzeum in Levice and private collectors, especially the local historian Pavol Polka.
The ground floor has three rooms. The first presents the oldest history of the region, from the Želiezovce culture through the Stone, Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Migration Period; the second is devoted to the Esterházy family and to personalities of the town (for example Franz Sacher, creator of the famous cake, or Bishop Augustín Fischer-Colbrie); the third recalls the period of the world wars, the Jewish fellow citizens and folk culture. The room upstairs is devoted to the life and work of Franz Schubert and is furnished with period furniture and a piano.
