About the museum
The museum was founded in 1990 as an outlying workplace of the Múzeum Slovenských národných rád (Museum of the Slovak National Councils) in Myjava, which belongs to the Slovak National Museum. It was solemnly opened on 21 July 1990 on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the birth of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik.
It is housed in the former Evangelical vicarage, built in 1878 by Pavol Štefánik, the father of M. R. Štefánik and the first pastor of the village, which had become independent from Brezová shortly before. Štefánik was born in this house. A new memorial-type exhibition was opened in 2005, on the 125th anniversary of his birth, and in July 2015 it was reinstalled with the addition of less well-known personal objects from the estate.
Visitors will find, for example, Štefánik's flying jacket from the time of an aircraft crash, a personal suitcase with his initials, and objects of exotic ethnography that he brought from his travels around the world as a passionate collector. Since 2021 the exhibition Milan Rastislav Štefánik. Generál – Osloboditeľ (Milan Rastislav Štefánik. General – Liberator) has been installed here.
