About the museum
Dušan Samuel Jurkovič (1868–1947) grew up in Brezová pod Bradlom, is buried there, and seven of his works stand in the town and its surroundings, including the Mohyla M. R. Štefánika (Štefánik Mound) on Bradlo. The first exhibition, Pamätná izba Dušana Samuela Jurkoviča v Brezovej pod Bradlom (Memorial Room of Dušan Samuel Jurkovič in Brezová pod Bradlom), was set up in December 2014 by the Kopaničiarsky región – miestna akčná skupina (Kopanice Region – Local Action Group).
In 2018, as part of a cross-border project of the INTERREG V-A Slovakia – Czech Republic programme, it was expanded with new exhibitions and became the Múzeum Dušana Samuela Jurkoviča (Museum of Dušan Samuel Jurkovič). It was solemnly opened on 27 October 2018, on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic. The founder is the town of Brezová pod Bradlom, and the museum is housed in the revitalised premises of the Národný dom Štefánikov (Štefánik National House) in the town centre.
The exhibition combines original objects, texts, pictorial material, architectural models and interactive technology. The section Ranný Jurkovič (Early Jurkovič) presents his work before the First World War, the section Brezová presents the past of the town, and the section Jurkovič v Brezovej (Jurkovič in Brezová) presents his works in his native region, including an original travertine slab from the drum (tumba) of the Štefánik Mound.
