About the museum
The Kultúrne a informačné centrum Na korze is housed in an old burgher house at Námestie slobody 62 in Sabinov. Apart from the information centre and souvenirs, there are two permanent exhibitions.
The first, called Pokladnica slobodného kráľovského mesta Sabinov (Treasury of the Free Royal Town of Sabinov), is an exhibition of the Krajské múzeum v Prešove. It presents the most representative collection objects from the town's history: guild chests, firearms and edged weapons, with the highlight of the Sabinov executioner's sword; numismatics, sacral art and historic devotional objects. A significant work is the Baroque painting The Sacrifice of Jephthah's Daughter from 1751 by Johann Wenzel Bergl, and special attention is paid to the history of book culture in the town. The exhibition also includes the display V pamäti napísané (Written in Memory) on the treasures of the town's historical libraries and archives, a gallery with a temporary exhibition of regional artists, and, in the corridor, an exhibition of historic postcards from the collection of Jozef Mik.
The second exhibition is devoted to the Czechoslovak film Obchod na korze (The Shop on Main Street), which won the Oscar for best foreign-language film in 1966. The exteriors were filmed in summer 1964 in Sabinov with the participation of local residents. The exhibition was opened on 12 June 2006; it displays photographs, props, the original screenplay, the correspondence of Sabinov residents with the filmmakers, the manuscript and documents of the author of the source work Ladislav Grossman, and excerpts from the film.
