About the museum

The Karol Točík Municipal Museum in Turzovka is a young regional local history museum. Its creation was initiated by the civic associations Spolok priateľov Turzovky (Turzovka Friends' Society) and Terra Kisucensis. Residents of the town and surrounding villages donated objects of cultural and historical value, which form the basis of the collection. The town council established the museum in 2015, with a statute effective from 1 October 2015; it began its activity on 1 May 2016 and was ceremonially opened on 12 August 2016.

The museum is named after Karol Točík (1890–1960), the Turzovka priest and dean, who devoted himself intensively to the history of Turzovka and Upper Kysuce. The museum's mission is to collect, preserve and present objects from the territory of the so-called Greater Turzovka, to which until 1954 today's separate villages of Dlhá nad Kysucou, Korňa and Klokočov also belonged.

The most valuable exhibit is an original bell, cast in 1614 by the founder of the town, Palatine Juraj Turzo, for the oldest wooden church in Turzovka; its stylised form also appears in the museum's logo. Since 12 August 2022 a permanent exhibition, Zo života v starej Turzovke (From Life in Old Turzovka), devoted to housing and farming, has been installed in the museum. The building also houses the historical library of František Tagáni, with more than 1,600 titles of old prints.
