About the museum

The Kysuce Museum was founded as the District Local History Museum in Čadca and began its activity on 1 January 1972. The first concept of an exhibition on the region was drawn up as early as 1932 by Ľudovít Janota, who proposed placing it in the Palárik House. In 1974 the name was changed to the Kysuce Museum, and the systematic building of ethnographic collections began.

In its early years the museum also devoted itself to the care of monuments and nature protection. The rescue of folk-architecture monuments led to the creation of an open-air exhibition in Vychylovka. Since 1998 the museum has also specialised in documenting forest railways in Slovakia. Today it manages five branches: the Čadca Museum, the Museum of the Kysuce Village and the Historic Forest Switchback Railway in Vychylovka, the Radoľa Manor House and the local history museum in Krásno nad Kysucou.

Since 2022 a new permanent exhibition on the history of Čadca and the surrounding villages has been installed on the second floor of the seat building on Moyzesova street in Čadca. The founder of the museum is the Žilina Self-Governing Region.
