About the museum
The Medvedia štôlňa (Bear Adit) was created in the 19th century, when mining in Liptov experienced its greatest boom thanks to the Industrial Revolution. Pyrite was mined, used mainly for the production of sulphuric acid. There was less ore than expected and operation was not profitable, so the mine was closed soon after it opened; it consists of a single adit.
The mining tradition in Liptov goes back to the 13th century, when mining and metallurgy developed in the context of German colonisation. Today the adit is the only accessible old mine workings in the region.
The tour introduces visitors to geology, mineralogy and mining and their significance for society. It also includes a competition in pulling a mining cart. The adit is operated by the company Stanišovská, s. r. o., which also offers tours of the Stanišovská jaskyňa (Stanišovská Cave) and of the mint in Liptovský Ján.
