About the museum
The historic building stands on the site of a coaching inn, which is mentioned as early as the 17th century. The name of the establishment arose after 1850. Besides its function as a hotel and restaurant, which was partly preserved until the 1970s, the Čierny orol also served as a centre of cultural life. In 1830 the history of Slovak amateur theatre began here, and later several societies were based here.
During the May Day demonstration of 1918, the Mikulášska rezolúcia (Mikuláš Resolution) was read out in the courtyard. It was the first public document in which the Slovak nation openly declared its right to self-determination and its commitment to the idea of Czech-Slovak mutual solidarity.
Today the building is managed by the Liptovské múzeum. It houses the exhibition Z dejín lovu, poľovníctva a rybárstva na Liptove (From the History of Hunting, Game-keeping and Fishing in Liptov) and the exhibition Elena Badová, devoted to the folk healer and herbalist; cultural and educational events also take place here.
