About the museum
The Múzeum Janka Kráľa was established by decision of the Council of the District National Committee in Liptovský Mikuláš of 3 June 1955 as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum, and was named after the poet Janko Kráľ, a native of the town. The idea was promoted, among others, by the painter Janko Alexy and the sculptor Alfonz Groma.
The seat became the Illéšházy Manor (Illéšházyovská kúria), the first county house, which was rebuilt in 1958–1961; the museum opened to the public in 1961 under its first director, Martin Martinček. Today it is run by the town of Liptovský Mikuláš.
The main exhibition, Kapitoly z histórie mesta (Chapters from the History of the Town), leads through fourteen chapters from the first mention of Saint Nicholas to the end of the Second World War. The museum also includes the exhibition Príbeh vody (The Story of Water) about the Liptovská Mara water reservoir, the exhibition Tatrín and the Petitions of the Slovak Nation in the former Evangelical parsonage, the birthplace of the Rázus siblings and, in summer, the accessible synagogue. In the Pongrácz manor (Pongrácovská kúria) there are an exhibition on pigeon post and the museum's specialist workplace.
