About the museum
The Liptovská galéria Petra Michala Bohúňa was established in 1955 and is the third-oldest institution of its kind in Slovakia, after the Slovak National Gallery and the East Slovak Gallery. The idea of its establishment was long championed by the painter and writer Janko Alexy, and the official founding was preceded from 1949 by the collecting of works by the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. The picture gallery opened on 17 June 1956 with the exhibition Liptovskí umelci (Liptov Artists of the 19th and 20th Centuries), and its first director was Vojtech Mensatoris.
The gallery is housed in the building of a former Evangelical school from the second half of the 19th century, where the painter Peter Michal Bohúň taught in 1854–1865. The gallery bears his name in his honour and has a separate Bohúň Hall. The building was rebuilt in 1971–1978.
The collections contain approximately 5,300 works of art, focusing mainly on Slovak fine art of the 19th and 20th centuries and on old art. The gallery also runs the Galéria Kolomana Sokola (Koloman Sokol Gallery) and the Dom Jana Hálu (Ján Hála House) in Važec. The founding body is the Žilina Self-Governing Region.
