About the museum
The Liptov Village Museum arose in connection with the construction of the Liptovská Mara water reservoir, which flooded part of the Liptov basin. Valuable monuments from the affected area were to be saved by relocating them to a site behind the village of Pribylina. The foundation stone of the museum was laid in 1972, and the open-air museum was opened to the public in 1991.
The site is not laid out as a classic village; it resembles a historic market town with the privileges known in several Liptov villages. Wooden houses of cottagers, peasants, craftsmen and the village mayor stand here, together with a village school and a gentry manor house from Paludza. Two stone buildings from the flood area have been reconstructed: the early Gothic Church of Our Lady from Liptovská Mara, and the Gothic-Renaissance manor house from Parížovce, regarded as the oldest surviving gentry residence in Liptov.
In the upper part of the site a static exhibition of the historic rolling stock of the Považie Forest Railway has been on display since 2001, and since 2020 a historic little train has run here. The museum belongs to the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok, and in summer it enriches visits with programmes presenting folk crafts and customs.
