About the museum
The Orthodox synagogue in Prešov was built in 1897 and 1898 by the Košice construction firm Kollacsek & Wirth. It is the central building of the grounds of the Orthodox Jewish community in Prešov, which also include the Hasidic beit midrash, the rabbinate, a ritual slaughterhouse, a school and the community offices; in the middle of the courtyard stands a Holocaust memorial. In the 1990s the synagogue underwent a general reconstruction, and it still serves for Jewish worship today.
The Prešov Jewish Museum was founded in 1928 as the first of its kind in Slovakia. The largest share in collecting objects was held by Eugen Bárkány and Teodor Austerlitz, son of the well-known Prešov rabbi. From 1931 the museum was housed in the Kumšt water tower. During the war its activity ceased and its collections went to the State Jewish Museum in Prague, from where they returned to Slovakia in April 1993.
Part of the collection was made accessible to the public on 25 November 1993 as the permanent exhibition of Judaica in the women's gallery of the Orthodox synagogue. The grounds also include the Klaus Synagogue from 1934 and 1935, which now houses offices, and the former Orthodox Jewish school.
