About the museum
The Regional Gallery in Prešov, formerly also known as the Šariš Gallery, was founded in 1956 and is one of the oldest regional galleries in Slovakia. It is the regional gallery of the Prešov Self-Governing Region and a professional centre for other galleries in the region. It manages more than 4,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and objects of applied art from the late 15th century to the present, with a focus on eastern Slovakia.
The gallery is housed in three historic burghers' houses at Hlavná street nos. 49, 51 and 53. House no. 49 stands on Gothic foundations and was later rebuilt in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. House no. 51 has kept its façade from 1784; at the beginning of the 19th century the painter Ján Rombauer lived in it. House no. 53, after Renaissance and Neo-Gothic alterations, served in the 19th century as a residence and as commercial premises. The reconstruction of the building at Hlavná 49 began in 2015.
In the renovated spaces the gallery opened the permanent exhibition Sacred Art of the 15th–19th Centuries on 16 December 2022, with 52 works, mainly woodcarvings and icons from the Šariš and eastern Slovak region. Besides it, the gallery prepares rotating exhibitions, educational programmes, lectures and concerts, and plans a new permanent exhibition of sculpture in the Prešov region.
