About the museum
The Museum of Rusyn Culture in Prešov was established by decision of the Ministerstvo kultúry SR of 11 December 2006 as an independent organisational unit of the Slovak National Museum, effective from 1 January 2007. It opened to the public on 21 February 2008 in temporarily leased premises as a multifunctional space. The decision built on the recognition of the Rusyn national minority in Slovakia, on the codification of the standard Rusyn language in 1995 and on the results of the census.
At the end of 2011 the museum received the building of the former Antonín Zápotocký Barracks at Masarykova 20 in Prešov through a transfer of administration. From 1 April 2012 it was closed to the public while the collections were moved and the premises prepared. It has operated in the new building since 1 June 2012, and part of the first floor was opened to the public on 30 December 2013.
The museum collects, professionally processes and presents evidence of the material and spiritual existence of the Rusyn population and also focuses on Rusyns living abroad. Its permanent exhibitions include Divadlo v premenách času (Theatre Through Time), about the Alexander Duchnovič Theatre; Chlieb duše (Bread of the Soul), a collection of liturgical objects of the Greek Catholic Church; Upevni, Bože (Strengthen Us, O Lord), on the history of the Orthodox Church; and the miniatures of wooden churches by Ladislav Cidyl.
