About the museum
The Múzeum vín was founded in 1994 in the historic cellars beneath the Mestský úrad (municipal office) in Prešov. In 1504, after a major fire in the town, they were rebuilt into a new municipal wine cellar; the main vaulted hall today serves as the tasting room. Other spaces were used for storing wine. In the 18th century, at a time of unrest and peasant uprisings, the cellars were turned into a prison; during wars they served as town shelters, and later as warehouses. Before the reconstruction they had been flooded and had fallen into disrepair; the reconstruction began at the end of 1993, thanks to the town's support.
The exhibition extends over an area of 500 m² on two floors. On the first floor are wines from all of Slovakia's wine-growing regions, from large producers, small private producers, cooperatives and school cellars, with texts on the size of each region, its climate and grape varieties. A separate section is devoted to the Tokaj wine region – its history, grape varieties and the technology of producing Tokaj wines. It is complemented by a photo gallery of vine varieties and three-dimensional exhibits on grape cultivation and winemaking.
On the second floor are wines from almost all European countries, as well as from Asia, Africa, Australia and South America, including sparkling wines, port, sherry, Madeira and vermouth. The museum includes a shop and a tasting hall for about 50 guests.
