About the museum
The Mestské múzeum v Rajci was established in 1992 and opened to the public in 1993. It is housed in a 17th-century building in the southern part of the square, which is a national cultural monument. In the 19th century it was a single-storey burgher house with Renaissance and Baroque alterations, which served as the town brewery and later as the town inn. The façade is accentuated by a stone gallery with arcades.
Two permanent exhibitions present the town and its surroundings. The ethnographic exhibition is devoted to the history and craft traditions of Rajec, and the natural-science exhibition documents the natural conditions of the Rajec Basin in three habitats: the water environment, the forest and the foothills with meadows.
On the building are memorial plaques to two natives of Rajec: the zoologist and naturalist Ján Frivaldský and the priest and teacher Juraj Slota Rajecký. The museum is managed by the town of Rajec.
