About the museum
The Andrej Kmeť Museum is housed in the first building of the Slovak National Museum, built in Martin on the initiative of the Slovak Museum Society to a design by the architect Milan Michal Harminc. The foundation stone was laid on 8 August 1906, and almost half of the costs were raised through a national collection. After completion in 1907, the first nationwide exhibitions – historical, archaeological, numismatic, palaeontological, mineralogical, botanical and zoological – were opened to the public in 1908, together with a picture gallery and a library.
The building became state property in 1948, and in 1964 the district local-history museum, the Turiec Museum Andrej Kmeť, was installed in it. Extensive reconstruction took place in 1972–1975, and at the end of 1975 the museum reopened. Since the mid-1990s the building has been a national cultural monument, and since 1996 it has again been part of the Slovak National Museum.
Today the department of natural science collections of the Museums in Martin is located here, and the museum manages almost half a million collection objects. The new permanent exhibitions Príroda Turca (Nature of Turiec) and Kmetianum were opened in 2017: the first presents the geological development and habitats of the Turiec region in dioramas with interactive elements, and the second the history and mission of the SNM and the personalities who shaped it, especially its founder Andrej Kmeť.
