About the museum
The Museum of the Slovak Village is the largest ethnographic open-air exhibition in Slovakia. The Slovak National Museum in Martin has been building it since the 1960s at the Jahodnícke háje site in the south-eastern part of the town.
The exhibition presents the traditional folk architecture, housing and way of life of the inhabitants of north-western Slovakia in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The original intention was to present the traditional building culture of all of Slovakia, with its regional characteristics. So far the regional units of Orava, Liptov and Kysuce – Podjavorníky have been completed; the Turiec region is not yet finished in terms of buildings.
The site today consists of 145 residential, farm, technical, social and sacred buildings; some of them are furnished and open to visitors. They include farmsteads with residential and farm buildings, and separate technical, social and sacred buildings. Since November 2004 the civic association Jahodnícke háje has been active at the museum; it supports the development of the open-air museum and organises cultural events.
