About the museum

The gallery is housed in the Župný dom in the centre of Martin. The original two-storey gallery house in Late Renaissance style dates from the end of the 17th century; in the 1780s it was adapted for the needs of the Turčianska stolica (Turiec County), and after a major fire in 1881 it was rebuilt. From 1980 to 1987 the building underwent heritage restoration to its Baroque-Classicist appearance, and the interior was adapted for gallery purposes.

The gallery was established on 1 January 1983 as the seventeenth gallery in Slovakia. It opened its first exhibitions to the public in 1987; at that time Mária Galandová donated a collection of 127 works by Mikuláš Galanda to it. Today it is a museum-type institution with regional scope under the Žilina Self-Governing Region.

The collection was formed mainly in the 1980s and consists primarily of works from the 20th century, among them Galanda's paintings, drawings and graphic works, works by natives of Martin and founders of Slovak modern art. The new permanent exhibition “legenda – la ganda – galanda” presents Galanda's work in six thematic sections.
