About the museum
The Múzeum Martina Benku is housed in the house that the painter Martin Benka (1888–1971) had built in 1956–1958 and in which he spent the last years of his life. It was opened to the public at the beginning of the 1970s and belongs to the Slovenské národné múzeum – Múzeá v Martine (Slovak National Museum – Museums in Martin).
According to the master's last will, the interiors are preserved in their original form and show the environment of the 1960s. The studio and study furniture was designed by the furniture designer Ján Šimo-Svrček. The most striking feature is the studio with a large glazed part of the wall and roof; visitors can also see the study, the bedroom and a small gallery with paintings, including Krajina z Terchovej (Landscape from Terchová), which was awarded in Paris in 1937.
In 1960 Benka had already handed over to the state approximately 5,200 works, and he bequeathed the rest of his property to the state in a will of 1969. The museum now manages about 12,000 works of art and personal items of the artist. After four years of reconstruction it reopened to the public on 29 June 2023.
